Long term buy and hold investor. Planning for retirement. I’m not necessarily looking to beat the market, I’m just hoping to earn my fair share without taking on too much risk.
My portfolio is bias to small cap and value. Traditionally these asset classes have performed better than large cap growth. However, I do have my second largest position in a global ETF which is a large cap blend fund, giving me some exposure to those sexier growth stocks, but in smaller propositions than say the S&P 500.
I prefer all of equity ETFs to be global ones. I prefer the diversity this offers and believe it reduces my portfolio’s risk.
To further diversify I have some exposure to real estate, emerging markets and commodities (gold and silver).
Recently I’ve added some bonds which is my experimental part of my portfolio. I think they will recover nicely in the next 1-3 years as market rates of interest lower.
I’ve read quite a few topical books but the ones that have inspired me include ‘We’re Talking Millions - 12 Ways to Supercharge your Retirement’ by Paul Merriman and ‘The Little Book of Common Sense Investing’ by John Bogle.
