Is it possible to opt out of fractional shares? To reduce our risk of exposure?
Hi, I donāt think it is possible if you want your ISA or SIPP to be with IE.
However, you could more your ISA or SIPP to another provide who doesnāt offer fractional shares and only deals in full shares.
Hi, for interest: the question of whole shares was asked before, along with an answer from IE, see link.
Fractional shares are allowed from April 2024 in ISA accounts
Unfortunately, Jeremy Hunt actually said the aim was for ācertain fractional shares contractsā to be held in an ISA in 2024.
We are all waiting to hear what exactly he meant by ācertainā. It is a cause for optimism though.
The guy on Pension Craft has done a video today where he says that fractional shares will be allowed. It would silly not too. But then again, the current Government are very silly.
After the budget is there any more clarity on fractional shares?
Hi @cjbhdasiuyfi below is the text from the Budget Statement, so no official announcement yet.
āThe government is committed to ensuring people have the opportunity to invest in a diverse range of investment types through their ISAs. As previously announced at Autumn Statement 2023 this includes certain fractional share contracts, and the government is working as quickly as possible to bring forward legislation by the end of the summer following detailed engagement with industry and the FCA.ā
@Paul_M/@DeeFunds/@Adam.Lees, would InvestEngine be able to provide an update on their plan for fractionals in ISAs since the spring budget, are you simply waiting for a government announcement in the summer or have you had more engagement with the government directly about this?
There is now going to be a General Election before the end of the summer. So what will happen with this?
Iād say any decision on fractionals is on-hold until there is a new government.
Labour hasnāt given a specific view.
Nobodyās instructing us to sell-down, nor asking platforms for unpaid tax yet though. Iāll stay invested until they do.
@Adam.Lees Any update on this matter please. Iām interested in opening an ISA S&S with InvestEngine but hesitant because of the legality of fractional share in ISA.
Consumer Duty states customers expect clear and timely information provided. However, reading this long post, Invest Engine couldnāt provide any clarity on fractional share in ISA.
I would appreciate IE can share clear guidance. Thanks
If the government and HMRC arenāt clear how can you expect IE to guide?
Looks like HMRC has dropped this now and is expecting a change in law from the government to permit fractional shares in ISAs (which, as outlined above, I believe already to be permitted under current law).
HMRC to allow fractional shares in Isas ahead of rule change
