Hello,
My daughter is looking to start a DIY portfolio with InvestEngine and she is relatively new to investing. I wish I could help but my portfolio is being managed!
Does anyone have any tips for her?
Thanks

Low Cost S&P 500. There a lot of videos on YouTube to explain more. Check out https://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/030916/buffetts-bet-hedge-funds-year-eight-brka-brkb.asp#:~:text=In%202008%2C%20Warren%20Buffett%20issued,Bloomberg%20op%2Ded%20in%20May.
I would suggest telling her to throw everything at the ETF VWRL and reinvest dividends if she wants to have skin in the game ASAP.
In the mean time she should do her own research to construct her ETF portfolio.
A good to check out is https://markets.ft.com/data/funds/uk/compare it shows your the performance of ETFs over five years with initial 1000.00 investment, also shows the risk of the funds, OCR costs etc
The Vanguard S&P 500 is VUSA and VWRL. Most of my money is in VUSA and I wanted something higher risk for 15K bond that matured and went for the IITU iShares S&P 500 Information Technology
When you see it in the FT Fund Comparision you can see over 5 years there is 1k more gain with IITU, but it is higher risk.
I also like to look at what’s popular on some of the big UK based retail platforms for ideas (wisdom of the crowd etc)…they all publish their most popular funds.
https://www.ii.co.uk/etfs/top-etfs
https://freetrade.io/etfs/most-traded-etfs
https://www.hl.co.uk/shares/exchange-traded-funds-etfs
Obviously, you can only use this as a starting point…but you’ll see lots of the same vanguard funds already mentioned are very popular
@buynhold, I guess with your id name, you not doing a Meet Kevin, youtuber just got of the market, with over 20 million. I just think it is hard to time the market, and then time it again to get back in.
You might want to recommend top traded as a feature update for Invest Engine
Thanks
Thanks for your responses everybody! I did also ask her to get some literature on it and she came back with a copy of ‘ETFs for Dummies’. I am sure she will manage
Rather than a S&P500 ETF - which is a punt on the US stock market - I’d go for a global equity ETF. That way getting exposure to Japanese, European and UK companies to. It’s still likely to be around 60% in the US - but obviously much more diversified
Up to March 2021 I did Managed Funds with HL, then with the lockdown, decided to learn more about investing, and found these videos, which she might find useful Investing Demystified - (How to Invest if you can't beat the markets - Part 1 of 5) - YouTube
I will never go back to managed funds, and will stick with low cost Index Funds.
