I’m new to investengine and like what it offers but there seems to be a real issue with percentage gains.
It is quite important as I want to see accurately my gains or losses. Firstly I don’t like the time weighted returns. I want to know if if I put in 100 pounds it goes to 110 I’ve made 10 percent.
But even with twr the figures seem way out.
As an example check out the physical silver image. I’ve made 17 pence on 25 pounds invested which is showing an 8.41% gain.
With my maths it’s a 0.68% gain. Is it just me? Am I missing something?
Here’s an example. Doing it your way what would be your percentage return you want showing?
*You invest £1,000 and gain 5% return giving you a total of £1,050
*You then come in to some money and add another £100,000 to your investment, and again this gains 5% giving you now a total of £106,102.50 from a total amount invested of £101,000
*You then withdraw £100,900 from the account, this leaves you with a total of £5,202.50
*At this point your principle investment is only £100 and you have £5,202.50 total in the account, so by your method you now want it to show a percentage gain of 5000+
Thanks for your reply and good example. I’ll do some reading. I have noted that 2 other well known trading platforms that I use also use time weighted returns but the percentages quoted on investengine seem wildly different to what I’m used to.
No problem, you can get some good explanations on YouTube. It’s good you are looking at the mechanics of things though. The more you understand, the more comfortable with investing you become, and the more good decisions you make.
One is is down £35, which is -1.91% of £1828, IE thinks this is more like +0.08% … I give up
… Received a very helpful explanation from the IE team, thanks guys!
It’s confusing as the total return £amount includes all purchases, sales, cap gains, divs since position opening, the percentage in the brackets shows just the gain/loss of the shares currently owned.
Hi there! Please note that the indicators are not live, but instead are accurate to a certain point in time when operational processes are performed that allow us to gain that data.
The portfolio value, value difference in £ and TWR in % are not updated simultaneously and therefore there are times during the day when they might appear to “not add up”. The value difference in £ and TWR are updated overnight, the portfolio value is updated in the morning using the previous business day’s end of trading share prices and then again at 2.30 pm using prices at the start of our trading window.
Our Development Team is currently working on synchronising these updates so that all three figures are refreshed simultaneously and are accurate in relationship to each other.
I’m pretty sure that -1.53% is not the total return (income and capital) from this holding within the portfolio. This % seems to show how much the price of the shares of this specific ETF I currently own have gone down, or may be not… no idea, but a gain of £35 can’t be -1.53% of anything.
